Telegram messenger has finally added support for group video calls, more than a year since the feature was announced. The update has also added animated backgrounds to the video calls.
The new feature has come to desktops, tablets and mobile versions of the app and users can now transform the pre-existing audio chats to video conference calls on the go. This new update puts Telegram, based in London, in the same league as Facebook Messenger, Apple’s FaceTime and WhatsApp.
Besides the video group video calls support, Telegram also added other minor features to the app. These include the animated background, animated emojis and some message sending animations. This update has also brought a special menu button for bots.
Telegram was launched on August 14, 2013 as a privacy-focused ad-free messaging app and has gone to join the mainstream in terms of popularity. As of January 2021, Telegram posted a user base of over 500 million active monthly users across the iOS and Android platforms.
Telegram prides itself of being the fastest messing app. It also declared free for ever and a sworn promise of being ad and subscription-free forever. The app also lets user share unlimited media such as pictures and videos as well as access the chats on multiple devices.
